The Ketogenic diet, or keto for short, is a new and popular dietary lifestyle which, put simply, involves eating alow carb, high fat diet. Studies show that when you drastically reduce carbohydrate intake and replace it with fat, your body enters a state calledketosis, during which the body burns more fat for energy than it normally would. Pretty cool, huh?


While many people who follow keto do so to burn fat, the diet has other potential health benefits worth mentioning. Studies show that the ketogenic diet mayboost insulin sensitivity, which proves extremely beneficial for those with type 2 diabetes or pre-diabetes. Additionally, the diet maylower the risk of heart disease by increasing levels of HDL or “good” cholesterol, decreasing levels of LDL or “bad” cholesterol, lowering blood pressure, lowering blood sugar, and reducing the number of triglycerides (fat molecules) in the bloodstream. 


Low carb diets, such as the keto diet, may also be helpful whentreating a variety of brain disorders such as epilepsy, Alzheimers, and Parkinsons. Large portions of the brain burn ketones for energy; when you put the body in a ketogenic state with increased levels of ketones, it has the potential to increase brain functionality. 


Although much of this research is not conclusive, it suggests that the keto diet may be most beneficial to those with metabolic, neurological or insulin-related diseases.In short, this diet certainly isn't just for those hoping to quickly lose a few pounds!
